Mặc dù siêu âm nhiễu xạ thời gian bay (TOFD) có thể được sử dụng cho nhiều ứng dụng khác nhau, công dụng chính của nó là kiểm tra mối hàn nhanh chóng. Lý thuyết TOFD cơ bản
TOFD thường được thực hiện bằng cách sử dụng sóng dọc làm phương pháp phát hiện chính. Cảm biến siêu âm được đặt ở mỗi bên của mối hàn. Một cảm biến gửi chùm siêu âm vào vật liệu và cảm biến còn lại nhận được tín hiệu siêu âm phản xạ và nhiễu xạ từ bất liên tục. TOFD có phạm vi bao phủ rộng với một chùm tia đơn bằng cách sử dụng nguyên lý lan truyền chùm siêu âm bên trong nêm và vật liệu được kiểm tra. Khi chùm tia tiếp xúc với bất liên tục hoặc vết nứt, năng lượng nhiễu xạ phản hồi và được truyền theo mọi hướng. Đo thời gian di chuyển (bay) của chùm tia nhiễu xạ cho phép phát hiện và định cỡ bất liên tục chính xác và rất đáng tin cậy, ngay cả khi vết nứt không vuông góc với chùm tia siêu âm. Trong khi kiểm tra TOFD, tín hiệu dạng quét A được thu thập và sử dụng để tạo hình ảnh quét B (mặt bên) của mối hàn. Phân tích được thực hiện ngay trên thiết bị hoặc sử dụng phần mềm trên máy tính, và con trỏ được sử dụng để để đo chiều dài và chiều cao của bất liên tục.
Trong khi TOFD là kỹ thuật nhanh, tương đối hiệu quả, phát hiện được các khuyết tật có hướng và hình dạng bất kỳ và khả năng đánh giá kích thước khuyết tật chính xác, TOFD lại có những mặt hạn chế cố hữu ở các vùng gần mặt trên và mặt dưới của vật liệu. Sử dụng OmniScan MX2, X3 và SX khi kiểm tra TOFD

Thiết bị và Phụ kiện sử dụng trong kiểm tra TOFD
- Thiết bị OmniScan phải được sử dụng với đầu dò, nêm, và phần cứng phù hợp để có thể kiểm tra các cấu hình mối hàn khác nhau theo yêu cầu của khách hàng. Thiết bị hỗ trợ tới 2 kênh TOFD (4 đầu dò) trong một lần quét.
- Đầu dò TOFD cùng nêm có nhiều loại hỗ trợ độ dày vật liệu khác nhau.
- Thiết bị OmniScan hỗ trợ sẵn cho một kênh TOFD. Không phải sử dụng phần cứng đặc biệt nếu chỉ kiểm tra với 1 kênh TOFD (2 đầu dò).
- Khi sử dụng 2 hoặc nhiều hơn kênh tín hiệu TOFD, OmniScan phải sử dụng một bộ chuyển đổi kết nối đến đầu dò và mượn 2 kênh từ 128 kênh của máy Phased Array.
- TOFD đòi hỏi phải có một bộ gá đầu dò thích hợp để có thể hoạt động hiệu quả.
- Với 2 kênh TOFD, có thể sử dụng bộ gá nhỏ gọn HSMT Compact hỗ trợ tới 2 kênh TOFD cùng lúc (4 đầu dò).

Lựa chọn đầu dò kiểm tra ToFD theo chiều dày
TOFD thường được ứng dụng để kiểm tra toàn bộ mối hàn hay kiểm tra khảo sát nhanh ăn mòn vật liệu. Trong hầu hết các trường hợp, có thể kiểm tra mối hàn chỉ sử dụng duy nhất một cặp đầu dò TOFD. Phương án đặt đầu dò TOFD cần được thực hiện để đảm bảo độ bao phủ của chùm âm cần cân nhắc một số yếu tố, bao gồm lựa chọn tần số đầu dò dựa trên chiều dày vật liệu kiểm tra. Tần số đầu dò được lựa chọn tương tự như với ứng dụng siêu âm Xung-dội thông thường. Ngoài ra, kích thước biến tử của đầu dò cũng được lựa chọn dựa trên loại vật liệu kiểm tra. Đầu dò có kích thước biến tử lớn hơn cho xung có năng lượng lớn và phù hợp với các đường truyền âm dài, tuy nhiên đầu dò có kích thước nhỏ lại cho góc mở lớn hơn để kiểm tra được phạm vi rộng hơn.
Đầu dò TOFD thường là đầu dò có độ dập xung cao, phát sóng dọc với độ phân giải tốt. Các đầu dò này sử dụng biến tử độ nhay cao, băng thông rộng với tần số từ 2.25 MHz tới 15 MHz và đường kính biến tử từ 3 mm (0.25″) tới 12 mm (0.50″).
